Part 1: Waiting on
Winter
An Ottawa winter is
serious business. You’d better find ways to enjoy it!
Today is the first day of January 2017 and we have three
months to wait. Two and a half years of planning and preparation have brought
us here, to the beginning of our new lives together. The open road and fantastic
cultural experiences await us as we anticipate the fading of winter and the
arrival of spring and a rebirth. We are going motorcycle touring in South
America.
Research
Training
Trying
Failing
Practicing
Motorcycle travel is fantastic but it is not for everyone and
is often uncomfortable. It is slow, tiring and requires frequent stops. It will
challenge our skills and it will make us fall down. It is personal. It is
experiential. It forces us to participate in, rather than to simply observe,
the ecosystems and cultures we visit. It is worth the discomfort. Travelling by
motorcycle, living with less and interacting with new and diverse people will
become the focus of our lives for the next year.
Can’t wait ‘til the snow is gone!
